La Croissanterie Figaro has quite a history!
Originally a house, the 5200 Hutchison establishment was transformed into a commercial building in the early 20's, in which a third was a clothing boutique and the balance, a candy store.
A few years later, these businesses were replaced by a bakery, where they installed the very first portable oven in Montreal. In the early 80's, when another owner took over, the name Croissanterie was given to the establishment and a "hippy" look with vibrant colors was chosen for the place …Quite a difference from the look of La Croissanterie Figaro that we know today!
In 1989, it was sold again and the name then became Croissanterie Hutchison. The floors, look and menu were also changed for a more "fast food" setting that included hot dogs and ice cream.
Finally, in 1991, Al Charmant became the owner of La Croissanterie and turned it into an enchanting coffee place. He decided to use the portable oven and completely changed the look, menu and atmosphere into a relaxing bistro. But it is actually only in 1995, after the terrace was renovated, that the name was changed to the one we now know, La Croissanterie Figaro.
